How UPS Charging Works
A UPS charges its battery bank using a built-in charger circuit that draws power from the grid, separate from the power it later delivers to your appliances during an outage. Charging current is highest when the battery is significantly discharged and tapers off as the battery approaches full charge, similar to charging a phone.
Typical UPS Charging Power Draw
- Small UPS (600VA-1kVA) with one battery: roughly 60-150W while actively charging.
- Mid-size UPS (1.5-2kVA) with one or two batteries: roughly 150-300W while actively charging.
- Larger UPS or inverter setups with multiple batteries: 300-600W or more, depending on battery bank size.
- Once the battery reaches full charge, draw typically drops to a small trickle or float charge, often under 20-30W.
How to Estimate Your Monthly Charging Cost
Multiply your UPS's approximate charging wattage by the hours it spends actively charging each day, divide by 1000 to get kWh, then multiply by your DISCO's per-unit rate. For example, a UPS drawing 200W for 4 hours a day uses roughly 0.8 units daily, or about 24 units a month, before accounting for the smaller trickle charge in between.
Reducing Charging Costs
- Choose a UPS and charger rated correctly for your battery bank size, since oversized chargers can waste energy.
- Keep your batteries in good health, since old or sulfated batteries draw more current for longer to reach full charge.
- Consider a solar-assisted hybrid inverter setup so a portion of daytime charging comes from solar instead of the grid.
